1970 album Curtis Composed By Curtis Mayfield By 1970, Curtis Mayfield was looking for a new musical direction. "If There's a Hell Below We're All Going to Go" boldly signaled a clean departure from his well-established and commercially successful soul vocal outfit the Impressions. Inspired by fellow soul composer Isaac Hayes' landmark album released a year earlier, Hot Buttered Soul, Mayfield opted for heavier grooves and more overtly political territory. Augmenting many tracks with intricately arranged horn and string sections, the recordings stretched to extended lengths becoming epic jams containing strong social statements and frank depictions of inner city ghetto life. "If There's a Hell Below We're All Going to Go" wastes no time getting your attention with a heavy rumbling of a severely distorted bass guitar setting the tone for the next eight minutes. Several conversations can be heard during the intro, the most audible of which is a woman extolling the virtues of reading the "good book" while congas hook into the slow building groove. Mayfield suddenly makes a startling echo effected announcement, calling out, "Sisters!/Niggers!/Whities!/Jews!/Crackers!/Don't worry, if there's a hell below/We're all going to go!," then holding a sustained scream as it fades into the distance, signaling the rest of the assembled musicians to join in the funk. Amongst an array of charging strings and blaring horns, propelled by a rock solid beat and the steady wank of wah-wah ...

Review by Lindsay Planer: Less than six months after the release of his triumphant solo debut My Whole World Ended (1969), Motown issued former Temptations' frontman David Ruffin's dozen-song follow-up Feelin' Good (1969). One factor in such a rapid turnaround was the availability of several leftovers from Ruffin's former project and another was undoubtedly to strike again while the iron was still hot -- as My Whole World Ended had topped the R&B charts for two weeks and spawned a pair of pop crossover hits to boot. Of the two non-Motown covers on this collection, the incendiary update of Dave Mason's "Feelin' Alright" wins hands down over the comparatively uninspired, but charming take of Jackie DeShannon's anthemic "Put a Little Love in Your Heart." None other than Motown founding father Berry Gordy himself is credited with the production on the gospel-flavored ballad "I'm So Glad I Fell for You." The raw emotion in Ruffin's fervent delivery and the spirited support of the Hal Davis Singers were enough to take the tune into the Top 20 R&B charts. Although the specific references may have changed, "I Could Never Be President" is as much a politically charged statement as it is an exuberant love song. It projects a more positive future than the present set of circumstances that most of Ruffin's core audience would have been concurrently experiencing. The exceptionally funky rocker "I Pray Everyday You Won't Regret Loving Me" -- which was co-penned by Gladys Knight and her ...

Biography by Jason Ankeny: Neo-soul diva Beverley Knight channeled the sound and spirit of classic R&B to emerge as one of Britain's biggest new pop stars of the '90s. Born Beverley Anne Smith to Jamaican parents in Wolverhampton, England, on March 22, 1973, she grew up in a strict Pentecostal environment and sang in her church choir throughout adolescence. Raised on a steady diet of gospel music and forbidden to listen to its secular counterpart, she nevertheless discovered crossover legends Sam Cooke and Aretha Franklin and began writing her own original songs at age 13. By 17, Knight was headlining local nightclubs and singing advertising jingles for a local radio station; the exposure earned her a recording contract offer, but she declined, instead studying religious theory and philosophy at the University of Wolverhampton. In late 1994, Knight signed to the independent label Dome, teaming with London production trio 2BE3 to cut her debut LP, The B-Funk. A critical smash that earned plaudits for its adherence to old-school soul production and sensibilities, the album won a number of media and industry awards but failed to translate its acclaim into commercial success. The single "Flavour of the Old School" nevertheless cracked the UK Top 40 following a 1996 re-release, but soon after, Knight split with Dome in the wake of creative tensions and signed with EMI's Parlophone subsidiary to release Prodigal Sista in the summer of 1998. The album generated five Top 40 ...

Biography by Andrew Leahey: British singer Joss Stone was only 16 years old when she appeared on the universal radar in 2003, armed with powerful vocals and a vintage, soul-based sound that belied her young age. Smartly aligning herself with a number of soul legends on her early records, Stone soon garnered a devoted audience at home and abroad, first for her reinterpretations of classic soul gems (The Soul Sessions) and, on future albums, for her songwriting chops and powerful delivery. Born Joscelyn Eve Stoker in 1987, Stone grew up mimicking the sounds of American soul and R&B icons, particularly the throaty stylings of Aretha Franklin. Her voice developed quickly, a maturation that earned her a first-place finish at a BBC singing competition in 2001. Stone was only 14 at the time, but a pair of local producers recognized her talent and contacted S-Curve CEO Steve Greenberg, who flew her to New York City for an audition. Stone wowed Greenberg with her rendition of Donna Summer's "On the Radio," and a record deal was quickly inked between both parties. With her parents' permission, she dropped out of school, changed her original last name, and primed herself for a career in entertainment. R&B/soul pioneer Betty Wright joined Stone for her first recording, becoming an instant mentor to the young singer while also serving as her co-producer and backup vocalist. Little Beaver, Timmy Thomas, Angie Stone, and the Roots also assisted Stone during those studio sessions ...
