Dr. Loyal D. Rue is professor of religion and philosophy at Luther College of Decorah, Iowa, and focuses on naturalistic theories of religion. He gave this presentation at the 2006 Beyond Belief Conference. Rue claims that the purpose of religion is to achieve reproductive fitness by providing 1) Personal Wholeness 2) Social Cohesion All religions use a central myth to integrate an explanation of the cosmos and morality into narrative of metaphors. This story is integrated into the collective consciousness by using the following elements: • intellectual -- philosophers & pundits to clarify, interpret and defend the myth • aesthetic -- something tangle to capture imagination, eg art • institutional -- structure to decide who runs the organization, when to meet, how to settle disagreements, etc... • ritual -- lets individual relive and experience the story • experiential -- personal and emotional experience Rue argues that as humans transitioned into more complicated and larger social organizations the religious stories were retold to legitimize the new larger social structure. Rue ultimately suggests that story needs to change to allow for a "global federation" in order to have social cohesion worldwide. He proposes a new story that involves "naturalistic/evolutionary cosmology" integrated with "biocentric/sustainable morality".
