www.thesuntoday.org - At 14:54 Universal Time (UT) the complex, intense magnetic fields of Active Region AR11105 became unstable. In a flash they release an intense burst of electromagnetic radiation (light). We call this flash of energy a solar flare. Solar flares typically release light covering most of the electromagnetic spectrum from radio and microwaves all the way to x-rays and gamma-rays. Sometimes flares are associated with tons of material blown away from the sun at speeds of millions of miles per hour. These fast blobs of material and magnetic field are called coronal mass ejections (CMEs). This flare does not appear to be associated with a CME. This video shows the flare simultaneously in 4 extreme ultraviolet wavelengths with the AIA telescopes onboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) spacecraft. At the top of each set of images for the 4 wavelengths is a trace of the x-ray emission from the flare. This is measured by a NOAA GOES satellite. The intensity of the flare measured by GOES is the scale by which we measure and classify flares. The power output of the x-rays is measured on a logarithmic scale similar to the Richter scale for earthquakes. The scale starts with A then B, C, M and X. A means 0.00000001 or 10 to the -8 (...10^-8) Watts per square meter. Then B is 10^-7, C is 10^-6 and so on. If a flare is 5 times 10 to the -6 (5x10^-6) we call it a C5 flare.
